What are the structural components and functions of a bottle cap mold?
 

Cavity and core

Precision parts that form the inner and outer shapes of the bottle cap. The cavity determines the outer surface of the bottle cap, and the core forms the internal thread or snap-on structure.

How can a cap mold be made with good quality and stability?
 

The structural stability of the bottle cap mold affects production efficiency and product quality. A stable mold structure can ensure dimensional accuracy, extend service life, and reduce scrap rate. The following are the key factors and optimization measures that affect the structural stability of the bottle cap mold:

 

Material selection and heat treatment‌

The mold material must have high strength, wear, and corrosion resistance. Commonly used materials include P20 for the push plate main board, H13 for the push sleeve, SKD61 steel for the sleeve, S136 for the cavity and core, etc. The surface hardness (HRC 50-55) is improved through heat treatment processes such as quenching and nitriding, and the anti-deformation ability is enhanced. The material consistency of the mold core and the cavity, and using D13 for the push sleeve, can reduce the stress concentration caused by the difference in thermal expansion.

 

‌Parting surface design‌

The reasonable layout of the parting surface directly affects the closing accuracy of the mold. Use a flat or stepped parting surface and fine grinding (roughness Ra≤0.8μm) to ensure no gap when the mold is closed. For threaded bottle caps, a slider or a rotary demolding mechanism must be added, and the parting surface must avoid key functional areas to avoid flash.

 

‌Cooling system balance‌

Uneven cooling can cause thermal deformation. Use a circumferential water channel design to ensure that the distance between the cooling channel and the cavity is consistent (usually 10-15mm), and optimize the water channel layout through CAE simulation. Copper alloy inserts can accelerate local heat dissipation and reduce temperature difference stress.

 

‌Support and guide the structure‌

Increase the number of mold feet, support columns (diameter ≥φ30mm), and guide columns (SKD61 material) to improve the rigidity of the template. The four-corner guide columns are positioned with a conical surface, and the accuracy must be controlled within ±0.02mm to prevent misalignment caused by lateral force.

 

Optimization of the demoulding mechanism

The ejector pin layout needs to be symmetrical (e.g., 8-12 pins are evenly distributed), and the diameter and stroke need to match (e.g., φ3mm ejector pin stroke ≤15mm) to avoid ejection eccentricity. The spring reset mechanism needs to be preloaded by 5%-10% to ensure fast reset without delay.

 

Dynamic balance design

During high-speed injection molding, the mold must pass the dynamic balance test to avoid vibration caused by the inertia force. The matching clearance of moving parts (such as inclined ejector) is controlled at 0.03-0.05mm, and self-lubricating materials are used to reduce wear.

What is the cap mold injection molding process?
 

During the injection molding process of the bottle cap mold, after the mold is closed, the molten plastics, such as PP and PE, are injected, pressure is maintained, cooled, and solidified. The injection screw of the injection molding machine retreats, and under the action of the spring, the mold opens along the parting surface. When the limit screw plays a limiting role, the runner pull plate breaks through the point gate, pulls the solidified material out of the cavity plate and automatically falls. The cavity plate continues to retreat under the drive of the injection molding machine, driving the template to move. When the limit screw plays a limiting role, the fixed mold part stops moving; due to the shrinkage of the melt during the cooling process, the plastic part is filled on the core. Driven by the injection molding machine, the movable mold part retreats, and the product is demolded from the cavity. At the same time, the inclined guide column pushes away the half block to complete the lateral core pulling action, and the movable mold part continues to retreat. When the limit plate plays a limiting role, the push plate separates the plastic part from the core, the mold is closed, and the demolding and side core pulling mechanisms are reset to complete an injection cycle.

 

How can we better improve the quality of plastic bottle caps?

The mold is designed as a three-plate type with a point gate according to the product structure. The gate is set in the center of the top of the plastic part. The point gate can significantly increase the shear rate of the melt, greatly reduce the melt viscosity, and facilitate mold filling. It is particularly effective for melts such as PE and PP that are sensitive to shear rate. In addition, as packaging containers, plastic parts have high requirements for appearance quality. The residual traces of the point gate are small, which can ensure the surface quality of the plastic parts. The gate is automatically broken during demolding, which is convenient for realizing the automation of the product production process, improving production efficiency, and increasing economic benefits. The non-balanced pouring system is adopted, the cavity is compactly arranged, and the mold size is reduced. To enable each cavity to be filled evenly simultaneously, the BGV (Balanced Gate Value) method is used to manually modify the gate size of each cavity to achieve balance. The cold material well is used to store the front cold material.

How can we maintain the plastic cap mold and extend its life?

Various dirt, including plastic residues and oily substances, often adheres to the bottle cap mold during production. Not only is its appearance affected, but if it is not treated, it will also hurt product quality and mold life. The actual situation shows that targeted mold cleaning agents can be wiped with a soft cloth or sponge, and finally, the residue can be completely removed with clean water. When dealing with stubborn dirt, a mixture of vinegar and bleach is extremely effective. Mix them in equal proportions, spray them, wait 3 ~ 5 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly with water to achieve the ideal cleaning effect. It has been shown that gently wiping small stains with toothpaste and soap is also quite effective on weekdays. These seemingly simple tips can make work more efficient and improve efficiency imperceptibly.
